Henge 12, king size, solid reclaimed mahogany, £800 plus delivery and installation.

This unassuming pile of beams was recovered from a farm near Clitheroe in Lancashire. They may not look like much but they are actually incredibly rare Brazilian mahogany. The owner of the farm had taken them from the roof of an outhouse and told me that the farm was originally built as a show farm for prospective buyers, hence the builders kitting out the outhouses in best mahogany beams. Thankfully that was over 60 years ago, so there's no guilt in using those beams to make beds from.

This is the frame in its most basic state. Each upright of the headboard is bolted to the frame at two points and is also screwed through for absolute stability. The headboard is five feet high, which is why Calum's 14-year old head is just popping out behind it.

For this bed I decided that the mattress ought to sit right on top of the bed platform. This allows the frame to have the smallest possible footprint for a king size bed. Personally I prefer to see the mattress sitting inside the frame but who am I to judge?

This picture shows that the cross-piece is actually double the thickness of the uprights. Taking into account the depth of the average skirting board, this will allow the lintel to lie flush with the wall behind the bed.
